Anthony Forbes

The head of the history department in 1967

Anthony Forbes was the head of the history department in 1967 when McClellan was fired. The administration quoted his evaluations of McClellan out of context while trying to justify firing McClellan.

Though Forbes did not entirely agree with the movement to save McClellan, he was frustrated by the misquotations attributed to him and said that he did think that McClellan was an excellent teacher. Many felt that Forbes was on the side of the administration.

In response, Forbes later wrote that though some segments of the university had “saddled” him with being “the voice of an administration hatchet-man,” he did not think of himself as for the administration. While he “may not always have seemed to all persons to have been on the side of the angels, [he] did at least try to do a difficult job with honesty and integrity.”
